A wide range of scholarships is available at national level. Of these scholarships, a large number are offered by the 13 talent-fostering organisations, which are supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) (see below). In contrast, to structure doctoral programmes (e.g. Research Training Groups), the personality of the Ph.D. candidate also plays an important role in the selection procedure of these organisations.

Organizations for the Promotion of Young Talent

The organizations for the promotion of young talent gear their funding to the funding guidelines of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (all documents in German). Currently Ph.D. candidates are being sponsored with 1,350 Euro per month. In addition, a research fee of 100 Euro is usually granted. There is also the possibility to receive a family supplement of 155 Euro.

The funding period usually lasts for a maximum of three years. In exceptional cases – especially in the case of being parents – this funding can be extended to four years. This information does not apply to the offers of structured doctoral programmes as well as for single special programmes.

All programmes are aimed at all Ph.D. candidates admitted in Germany, especially to refugees and asylum seekers. Here you will find a short overview (PDF, GER).
